The brief was to develop a new visual identity for the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab located in Cambridge that emphasizes the collaboration and partnership between the two organizations. Drawing inspiration from the horizontal and vertical bars present in the original IBM (”8-bar”) and MIT logos, the new mark brings the two into alignment. These bars and the joined, gradient colors serve as the foundation for the visual system.

Furthermore, I designed and programmed an image processing application that facilitated the creation of exclusive media and imagery within the system, highlighting the association with AI and computer-generated assets. Images or sequences loaded into the processor will be translated into pixelated outputs based on the brightness of pixel areas.
Logos of MIT and IBM reduced to lines and combined form the new logo Brand colors range from IBM Blue to MIT Red

Using the system of horizontal and vertical bars within the different gradient color spectrums, we were able to expand the visual library with illustrations that reflect the various research themes of the institution.
